SUNBURY ON THAMES, MIDDLESEX-Airscrew Modular Aircraft Heaters from AMETEK Aerospace & Defense feature fiberglass-reinforced silicone rubber heating elements that provide durability, flexibility and heat efficiency. The heaters can be used alone as a duct heater or in combination with a fan for applications that include cargo/animal bays, crew rest areas, galley areas, cockpits, door draft areas, windshield or instrument demist, and areas where supplementary heating is desired.
The heaters have several advantages over traditional hot rods or bare element heater designs. The unit has a large surface area in contact with the air, which allows it to operate efficiently at low temperatures, enhancing its long-term reliability and providing an added safety factor. The large surface area and low mass greatly enhances response times, making the unit compatible with modern control circuits
The heater element is vulcanized between two thin layers of fiberglass-reinforced silicone rubber and, in most applications, applied to an aluminum tube that serves as the heat transfer medium. The tubes are then arranged in concentric circles with an air gap. Cold air is warmed as it flows through the unit.
The resulting design is modular, lightweight and robust. Mat shape can be varied and lends itself to customized designs. The heaters feature three levels of inegral safety devices with a final thermal fuse to open circuit and fail-safe to prevent overheating. The air-insulating design further guarantees that the unit’s outer skin remains below 500 C. The unit’s tubular design provides strength and allows it to fit into existing round airways. A plate version also is available.
AMETEK Aerospace & Defense is a leader in engine and aircraft monitoring systems, data acquisition units, fuel and fluid measurement systems, cockpit instruments and displays, engine and airframe sensors, cables, harness assemblies, avionics blowers, fans, and heat transfer and cooling systems. It is a unit of AMETEK, Inc., a leading global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electric motors with annualized sales of more than $1.2 billion.
